Eric Engdahl

PhD, Chair, Professor

Dr. Eric Engdahl is the chair of the Department of Instructor Education. He teaches standards-based visual and performing arts methods to undergraduates, multiple-subject credential candidates, and masters students in the Early Childhood Instruction program. His classes encompass how to effectively integrate visual and performing arts across the curricula. He teaches single subject area methods courses in visual fine art, social studies, physical education, and music. In addition to pedagogy at CSUEB, he has taught in the Player Training Plan at Solano College, Wright State University, and Florida International University. He works as a consultant and artist in the classroom with many schools in the East Bay.

James Mitchell

PhD, Professor

Dr. James M. Mitchell is a professor of Teacher Instruction and has been a member of the CSUEB Instructor Instruction faculty since 2002. He teaches courses in the Educational Psychology track of the credential program as well as Technology in Teaching and Professional Responsibilities. His research focuses on cooperation and conflict resolution as related to HIV/AIDS education and service learning, likewise as democratic-citizenship skill evolution through cooperation in the classroom. Shortly, Dr. Mitchell is part of a seven-person team that is collaborating on a project to teach Social Studies using Stalk and other subjects, specifically as such teaching relates to Civil Rights.

A strong advocate for online instruction, Dr. Mitchell is certified in Quality Matters (QM), a national online form certification programme, and the CSU online course certification programme: Quality Online Teaching (QOLT). He has taught in the CSUEB Online Teaching and Learning program and has co-developed an online class in HIV/AIDS instruction that has been used by over i,000 teacher leaders and M-12 administrators worldwide. For the 2016-17 bookish year, Dr. Mitchell served as Special Consultant / Acting Area Director - Northern Region, to the CalState TEACH program. From 01/08 through 12/08 Dr. Mitchell chaired the Teacher Educational activity Section. He also has served as Squad Leader for the Single Subject area Online Team, as well equally the Transition-to-Educational activity program squad, a partnership with the Alameda Canton Function of Educational activity, in which classroom paraprofessionals earned their State of California instruction credential. Since 2014, Dr. Mitchell has served as a member of the CSUEB Information Technology Advisory Commission.

Dr. Mitchell is also agile with AERA (the American Educational Research Association), serving as Chair of the Special Involvement Group: Autonomous Citizenship in Education, as well past Plan Chair of the Special Interest Grouping, from 2002-to- 2018. He also has chaired the AERA Special Interest Group: Service Learning and Experiential Instruction (2002-2006). A native of Lowell, Massachusetts, Dr. Mitchell is an ardent fan of the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots. He has held season tickets to the Minnesota Vikings since his graduate school days at UMN, and he lives in the East Bay area. His girl is likewise a college pupil in the CSU system.

Mary Soto

EdD, Assistant Professor

Dr. Mary Soto is an banana professor in the Department of Teacher Education. She teaches English Methods, Introduction to Teaching Emergent Bilinguals, and Inclusive Teaching in Unmarried Discipline/Multiple Subject Classrooms. Her research focuses on long-term English language Learners and effective strategies for differentiating Linguistic communication Arts curriculum.

Dr. Soto is a Board Member of the California Council of Teacher Educators. Before coming to CSUEB, Dr. Soto was the Bilingual Teaching Program Coordinator at California State University, Chico. Prior to that, she taught high schoolhouse theater, E.L.D. and English in California, Mexico, and South Texas.

In addition to teaching, Dr. Soto enjoys working out at the gym and going for long hikes in the beautiful Bay Area. She has two children who attend elementary and high schoolhouse in Hayward. Her husband has been a bilingual uncomplicated school instructor for over 25 years.
